Premiere: Smut - "Bones of Summer"

Listen to the new single from Cincinnati's Smut.

On Smut’s latest single “Bones of Summer,” strong and steady punk vocals perch above the heavy, distorted instrumentals of a band that would otherwise get lost on the fuzzy spectrum of “shoegaze.” In other words, Tay Roebuck’s voice isn’t competing with all the fuzz. Coupled with nostalgic Dinosaur Jr.-esque guitar riffs, Cincinnati-based outfit Smut produces dream pop for those whose dreams are narrated by Courtney Love and Allison Wolfe. Altogether the content of their upcoming album, End of Sam-soon, brings to mind what the future musical endeavors of Snail Mail’s Lindsey Jordan might sound like. Or, if Clueless were being made today, “Bones of Summer” would have a prized spot on the film’s soundtrack alongside songs that similarly sound more upbeat in sound than message. The digital, vinyl, and cassette release for End of Sam-soon is slated for October 27th on Broken Circles Records. Listen to "Bones of Summer" below.

Tay Roebuck on "Bones of Summer":

"Bones of Summer is about loss, specifically the loss of someone you didn’t really know yet. It’s a loss that is more unnerving than sad and leaves you feeling uncomfortable and guilty for reasons you can’t understand. It’s a really complicated feeling that resonates."
