Premiere: Deadbeat Club - "Shark Tooth"

Watch Deadbeat Club's new music video for "Shark Tooth."

Deadbeat Club invite you into their hazy and intimate world of badass babes and friendship in their debut music video of “Shark Tooth”. The Western Massachusetts band is a supergroup of sorts--consisting of Lena Abraham formerly of T-Rextasy and Elenia Makka’s of La Noia. A few seconds into “Shark Tooth” and you can already trace a lineage of patriarchy-scorching girl-gang shrieks from 90’s bands like The Slits to Kleenex and beyond. While borrowing from these sounds, the band have crafted a reinvigorating, heavy, grunge-driven track. Elenia Makka fronts the band with her Liz Phair-style monotone is clear and literal, underscoring the direct quality of their pop-punk poetry, Makka’s fiery howl fluctuates between drawn-out sing-song and a deep, deadpan mutter, before the bass trails off; over the mantra “famished as a beast/I’ve been around looking for meat/wrap your soul in deep/we’re all out looking for meat.”

Directed by Lukas Koubou and Nikolas Papadimitriou, the music video delves into crossing images of woodsy and riotous landscapes as the girls travel off on motorcycles and posing up against graffitied walls. The video casts the band members as punk icons, including guitarist Talia Halpern as Daniella Doom, bassiest Lily Sarosi as Lilian Filth, drummer Lena Abraham as Edith Von Slayer, and vocalist Elenia Makka as Mandy Coxx. Filmed primarily on VHS camcorder, the gritty visuals are reminiscent of the 1996 documentary“Dirty Girls” that crafts an intimate portrayal of young girls smashing the patriarchy—creating art, publishing zines and speaking out against sexual violence. Deadbeat Club are a equally cool cast of punk girls that cruise around town on motorcycles and vintage dresses. As great as their recent EP was, Deadbeat Club have never sounded more alive than on “Shark Tooth”, a grunge-rock song that feels like
an epiphany.
