Premiere: Debbie Downer - "I Did It All For You"

Listen to the first single from Brooklyn's Debbie Downer.

Debbie Downer is a twee band for a new year, made up of four friends in Brooklyn who follow the punk rock tradition of adopting matching surnames. Jessica, Nicole, Emily and Jacob Downer debuted their new project this past winter, only to have their first show cancelled. It was scheduled for Friday the 13th, an unlucky omen making their band name surprisingly fitting and their Internet presence steadily on-brand. For example, their latest post reads, “It has come to our attention that people keep listing us on bills as 'Debbie Downers' - we'd correct them but our self esteem is too low.” But by no means does this foursome need to rely on gimmicks to get your attention.

On their first single “I Did It All for You,” from their upcoming EP You Know You’re Wrong, Debbie Downer employs minimalist drum beats and melancholy vocal melodies, softly sending the listener into a fuzzy, dream-sequence-in-Grease type haze. The echo-y harmonies give it that '60s pop softness, while twangy guitar riffs give it that Californian, surf rock edge. With this kind of sound, Debbie Downer follows in the footsteps of other modern twee acts such as Nice Try as well as Crabapple, who also utilizes a bouncy low end made recognizable by Cub’s Lisa Marr. “I Did it All for You” is the soundtrack to a picturesque bike ride down a tree-lined street, looking like you’re on your way to a picnic date when really you’re on your way to being unexpectedly dumped. Debbie Downer makes euphonious tunes for the pridefully pessimistic.

Jessica Downer on "I Did it All For You":

"I wrote this song to be an affirmation for a relationship I was in at the time. It's probably one of the most straightforward love songs I've ever written. However, Nicole changed the lyrics to the part she sings to something really mean about her ex and now it's disjointed lyrically, which titillates me a lot."
