Compilation: Constant and True - A Tribute to the Songs of Rose Melberg

A much-deserved dedication to the patron saint of twee.

The first time I listened to anything by Rose Melberg was when a fellow former band member (who was into way cooler music than me) played “For Sure” by Tiger Trap on his computer so we could cover it. It was right after my high school sweetheart and I broke up and he started dating someone else, and that song gave me the resilience I needed to get through it. Ever since then, I was completely hooked, and I wasn’t the only one who fell in love at first listen when it came to Melberg’s honest words and honeyed voice. Myself among many other adoring fans have cried to The Softies in their cars and danced to Go Sailor in their bedrooms. On what must’ve been a massive undertaking, Jeremy Jensen of The Very Most compiled a very special collection of covers called Constant and True: A Tribute to the Songs of Rose Melberg to pay much-deserved homage to the patron saint of twee.

The musical genius behind the aforementioned legendary bands and slightly more hidden gems such as Gaze, Gigi, Imaginary Pants, Tally Ho!, PUPS, Brave Irene, and Knife Pleats is very worthy of this flattering act of admiration, as these songs have been influencing artists from all over the world for years. Bands from the United States, Scotland, England, Spain, Norway, France, Australia, and the Dominican Republic have recorded their own spins their favorite Melberg tracks for this release, including Rocketship, Seapony, and Boyracer (who even came out of retirement to record their cover of “Alaska” by The Softies). An indie pop icon whose long catalog of work perfectly encompasses both the sadness and the sweetness of life is beyond deserving of this beautiful collection of cover. While each song on this compilation is very unique in its own way due to the vast array of artists, they all have one thing in common: they highlight Melberg’s timeless lyrics and melodies that seem so effortless but have been carefully crafted for our lucky ears for decades.
