Premiere: Sweet Saro - "Walk Away Love"

Listen to a new track from Maryland-based band Sweet Saro.

There was a time in my life when I would have turned up my nose at the mention of country music. I would scoff at my classmates who tailgated at Brad Paisley (or whatever) concerts and roll my eyes whenever someone put on a country song at a bar. But recently, I've had a change of heart after realizing that the genre is much more diverse than I thought. It started when I began listening to classic country artists like Patsy Cline and Skeeter Davis, who are basically OG sad girls, and then discovering more contemporary artists like Kacey Musgraves.  My playlist for September is literally all country-esque artists and then Carly Rae Jepsen. So when Baltimore-based band Sweet Saro's debut EP made its way to me, it felt like the perfect timing for me to fall in love with this album.

That's not to say Sweet Saro can be confined to this style of music - they fall more into the category of homegrown folk-country-Americana, like Songs: Ohia, but with a twist of attitude like New Zealand artist Tami Neilson. Their debut self-titled EP is filled with quiet moments of harmonies and acoustic guitars and bombastic swings of mandolin and drums with the occasional quick quip from vocalist Abby Becker. The EP was recorded in a house in the woods of Maryland and it will instantly make you wish you could have been among the artists over the two-year span it took to create the album. We're super excited to share the second single from their EP, "Walk Away Love", which Abby calls "as close as Sweet Saro gets to classic country". It's a subtlety melancholy track about loving someone (or something, like a cat as Abby mentions below) who won't always return the sentiment. It's one of the more calm songs on the album and truly gives a space for Abby's voice to shine as the song ebbs and flows for almost six minutes. Sweet Saro will be out September 12 and will at the very least make you rethink your country music snobbery.

Abby Becker on "Walk Away Love":

"Sometimes I say that "Walk Away Love" is a song about cats, because they have been my teachers in playing hard to get and wanting what you can't have. "Walk Away Love" is about that moment where someone has turned, they're getting smaller and further away, or they tell you they can't, and suddenly you want them so bad. It is about the irony of that turn, because in that moment you're essentially wanting someone gone because that's when you want them the most. The song is as close as Sweet Saro gets to classic country, but the best part is the overlapping harmonies at the end. Nellie and I just kept taking that part over and over again and our producer, Mike Walls at Audio Esoterica, showed us the first mix and we all loved it."
