Split: Whatever Forever / Kitten Forever

Minneapolis-based BFFs have officially stolen our hearts forever.

The first time that I wrote for THE LE SIGH was in August of 2013. The post consisted of three all-over-the-place paragraphs that were chock full of my seventeen-year-old self gushing about Poly Styrene, Mary Kate and Ashley, and Kitten Forever’s LP, Pressure. So when Kitten Forever’s latest single was up for grabs this month, nothing stopped me from raising my hand and taking it for myself. Listening to it for the first time with the intention of writing about it was like getting socked in the nose with a fistful of nostalgia and new things all at once.

"Miserable People" / "Nightmare" is a cassingle that's made up of all the goodness that the world could possibly gift to us, with Minneapolis-based BFFs Whatever Forever on one side and Kitten Forever on the other. It’s positively bursting at the seams with energy and there’s a fist full of love waiting to sock it to you on either side of this release. Whatever Forever’s "Miserable People" is up first. If 17-year-old me had heard this, drenched in denim and forever channelling Mariko Doi, she would have passed out on the pavement. Fuzzy guitar tones and the voice of a dreamy Clara Salyer has dip-dyed my heart. if I ever find myself in Minneapolis somehow, I hope I accidentally stumble into an unexpected house show and come face to face with this band: my heart would completely cave in at the sight of it.

Next up is "Nightmare" by Kitten Forever. One hit is all it takes. You’ll feel like you’ve wandered off in a heart-stricken daze from Whatever Forever’s house show, and into the garage across the road –where a group of girls have started shredding up their stuff, making music instead of doing what they’re told. “I don’t wanna / you can’t make me!” will batter through your brain cells as they shriek and squirm all over the floor. Your heart in pieces for the band across the road, your knees beaten and bruised for the girls yelping their lungs out right in front of you; it’s needless to say you will have internally fallen to bits by the end of this cassingle. But like I said before, it’s all in a really good way. "Miserable People"/"Nightmare" will leave its mark on your knees and on your heart. What Minneapolis has got to give will hold their own forever tightly around your chest no matter what. Believe me, you’ll be on the next plane to the city and searching for a place to move in next door to these BFFs in no time – and I don’t blame you! I’m already packing my bags.
