Grrrl's Guide: October 2014

Some spooktacular suggestions for the month ahead.

October is my totally fucking favorite. Any aspiring witch knows that the official season of all things spooky is upon us. We can watch The Nightmare Before Christmas without feeling like a teenage mall goth. We can eat and drink everything pumpkin while fully aware that we’re totally basic and just not caring. The chill in the air makes watching The Craft and playing Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board just that much more necessary. We’ve brought you an extra long Grrrl’s Guide this month so turn up the Stevie Nicks and celebrate the Season of the Witch in proper TLS fashion.

THREE SHOWS IN PHILLY + NEW YORK – OCTOBER 3RD
In Philly, “A Pynk Affair” features not one but two separate Weezer cover bands in the same night, and benefits Breast Cancer awareness and research. In New York there are a million shows happening but we’re picking two favorites: Downtown Boys are back at Silent Barn, with Joyride! (CA), Nona (PA), Adult Mom and Alice. At 603 Upstairs (rumor has it, this is literally above the Silent Barn), Weed Hounds is releasing their long-awaited new record supported by Gingerlys and Somerset Thrower.

RIOT CHICA’S BABES IN TOYLAND PARTY – OCTOBER 4TH
This month Riot Chica – the queer, punk, riot grrrl party – is paying homage to Babes in Toyland. DJ sets by your host Shomi Noise and live performances by Youthquake, Shady Hawkins (featuring two of my favorite comic artists, Suzy X & Mike Funk), and Plastiq Passion. Nothing better than a punk-themed dance party after a queer punk show. At Don Pedro’s. [Info + RSVP]

THE OUTSIDERS: A MARATHON DRAG KING READING – OCTOBER 5TH
You love The Outsiders and you love drag. This is six hours of drag kings reading The Outsiders at Silent Barn. Best part? Audience dress requirements: “Attendees are encouraged to dress in the gender of their choice from either side of the tracks.” [Info + RSVP]

SAM + ALLISON’S FALL FOLIAGE TOUR – OCTOBER 7TH-OCTOBER 19TH
Wait, you’re telling me Sam from Radiator Hospital and Allison Crutchfield from Swearin’ are playing songs... together... and also, separately? Yes, they are. Both. All of those things, actually. Which means Allison will be playing songs from her new album Lean In To It, and you’ll probably hear some of your favorite Swearin’ songs too. Don’t miss this tour when it hits your town. [Info + RSVP

BOOK LAUNCH FOR ‘ICON’ FT. JOHANNA FATEMAN + MORE – OCTOBER 8TH
Icon, which should really be titled “legends write about legends,” features a roster of fantastic authors writing about a celebrity that they have been infatuated with, or obsessed by, or projected themselves on to. Johanna Fateman (who writes about Andrea Dworkin) and Kate Zambreno (who writes about Kathy Acker) participate in a discussion for the launch of Icon with former Feminist Press editorial director Amy Scholder. [Info + RSVP]

STEVIE NICKS SELF-PORTRAIT SHOW – OCTOBER 10TH-OCTOBER 31ST
If you haven’t caught these truly ethereal self-portrait Polaroids by the White Witch herself, you’re in for a treat. Showing at the two NYC Morrison Hotel Gallery locations through All Hallow’s Eve! [Info]

SHOW AT THE CAKE SHOP – OCTOBER 12TH
OMG. Coup Savage & the Snips refer to themselves as “a soundtrack for the children to watch the first-world burn.” Damn. Okay. My immediate comparison is a dancier and sillier Tears for Fears. Gauzy (ex-Tayisha Busay) is more lo-fi, and I really dig the vocals. Max Steele is a prince and one of my favorite authors/performers. This one’s gonna be a really fun time. [Info + RSVP]
