Grrrl's Guide: August 2014

Summer's almost over but the fun times are just beginning.

Summer is fleeting and this is your last full month of it, so get your beach adventures in now! We’re pro-rock show, art show, and comedy show adventures, too.

NOSTALGIA RIDE TO THE ROCKAWAYS – AUGUST 3RD
Our first pick is not in the vein of feminist art and music happenings, but summer’s definitely slowing down and we recommend this activity in place of your regularly scheduled programming. Catch a ride in a postwar subway car headed to the Rockaways, then take a dip in the Atlantic once your dreamy ride is over. [Info + Tickets]

LONG ISLAND PUNK SHOW FT. GREAT THUNDER – AUGUST 5TH
There’s nothing better than escaping the city in the summer, and we’re pretty sure you don’t want to miss this excuse to get outta town. Great Thunder (Katie Crutchfield & Keith Spencer of Waxahatchee), Long Island’s own Deep Pockets, plus Pigeon Island, Acid Fast (CA), and Wiretap Crash play this weeknight gig at Mr. Beery’s in Bethpage. [Info + RSVP]

BAD DECISIONS READING – AUGUST 7TH
A reading of some of New York’s finest feminist writers at one of New York’s finest bookstores—WORD in Greenpoint. In honor of Sarah McCarry’s recent release of Dirty Wings, her Kurt Cobain-inspired YA novel, McCarry and writers Lola Pelligrino (ROOKIE) and Jen Pan (Jacobin) will read about the trials and tribulations of bad decisions. [Info + RSVP]

DOWNTOWN BOYS DESCEND UPON BROOKLYN – AUGUST 15TH
If you haven’t heard of Downtown Boys, you’ve been snoozing. This band is like an anti-colonialist punk party that comes to rage just for you – every set feels like something entirely new. Seeing them at a DIY venue in New York will likely make this even more special. [Info + RSVP]

FAMILY STYLE ART SHOW – THROUGH AUGUST 24TH
Lauded as a Bushwick art exhibition in Manhattan, Family Style is a survey of some of Bushwick’s most active (and most talented) artists now. Hosted in the space formerly occupied by Pocket Utopia, it’s naturally sprinkled with communal, artistic vibes. Curated by the brilliant Julie Torres. [Info + RSVP]

ASSSSCAT 3000 – THROUGH AUGUST 31ST
NBD, just some of our favorite comedians of all time performing at UCB theatre. Yup, that means Amy Poehler, Chris Gethard, and more folks from SNL and beyond. [Info + Tickets]
