EP: Sex Noises - Birds of Paradise

Sex Noises is a lot like the "When Harry Met Sally" orgasm scene.
Needless to say, the whole diner will be having whatever you’re having.

Sex Noises is one of the few bands that keep punk alive and breathing in my hometown. I first experienced their vigorous guitars and “in-the-know” stage banter a year ago with the release of their debut album, Clovers.  Ever since then I have been trying to come up with sacrifices to leave at their feet as an offering for something new to blare. As of the beginning of January, my prayers have been answered and I was granted their latest EP, Birds of Paradise.

As always, these four songs demonstrate what Sex Noises does best. Lead vocalist Anja Loughhead’s yelp is like a pair of tweezers that will pry out that soft spot you have in your heart for Kathleen Hanna when she shamelessly belts out lines like “bare your teeth through a grin / sink ‘em in / bare your teeth through a grin / sink ‘em in” with an Australian twang and a nod to the Riot Grrrl cry we all know and love. Although this EP begins with a feeling of routine for any fans that have stuck around since Clovers, Sex Noises boldly take a step forward with this release. As a band constantly praised for the yowl Anja lays on their listeners, the group definitely exposes their guts halfway through the EP when Jordan Rodger chimes in on the third track, "Liberal Man", to try his hand at vocals. With this valiant tone no one had readied themselves for, Jordan’s brief appearance (vocally reminiscent of Jay Reatard with a punch), will give you a moment to shove up off the ground, brush your knees off and familiarize yourself with your surroundings. But before you have a chance to ease in and get comfortable, Anja barges back in like a frazzled toddler left alone for too long, her tone shrill and piercing, reminding you that yes, she’s still here whether you like it or not – and in this case, you’ll be asking for it. This EP may be familiar territory for Sex Noises, but the self-assured deliverance of this release will get your blood pumping and begging for more.
