Monday Mix: Winter Whisper

Ten songs for the quiet cold.

It feels as if someone has logged into the photoshop of the world and ever so slightly turned the saturation down a few notches. The sky is as gray as the cement floors beneath us, and the only thing keeping us going is the fact that the holidays are approaching. When it gets cold outside (like this) I can be found hiding underneath many covers with my space heater on the highest setting. I'm extra sensitive to the cold so I layer – two pairs of tights beneath leggings, a thick sweater, a scarf, and often a winter jacket – around the house. I'm always complaining about how "I hate the cold" but this year I don't think it's so bad. I've been getting by with the help of lots of hot tea and the songs I'm about to share.

These songs were handpicked to evoke the feeling of a snow covered fire escape. Or maybe the feeling of putting your hands into someone else's pockets to keep warm. Or maybe the feeling of seeing your breath each time you exhale. I suppose it's intended to be sort of a dreamy, romantically cold combination of soft songs. It starts with Angel Olsen, a young lady with an old, classic voice and ends with "These Days" by the one and only Nico (which of course will always remind me of The Royal Tenenbaums). Other features on this mix include: Yohuna, The Raincoats, The 6ths, Dear Nora, Courtney Love, Emily Reo, Eric's Trip, Talulah Gosh, and Nico.
